about the residencies
Promoting contemporary art practice through artistic exchange of ideas
The VENTO SUL Art Residencies Program focus on art practice that falls outside of Eurocentric and Western narratives, providing opportunities for artists, curators, writers and musicians to research, develop their practice, explore connections, and build collaborations with creative minded people, communities and institutions in Portugal.
At VENTO SUL Art Residencies we support and provide the selected artists with a platform to incubate their ideas and exhibit them to international peers and the general audience in Portugal. Our programmes run for a maximum of three-months at the time, since at our physical space we host 2-4 residents simultaneously.
Our residency programme is focused on critical issues in contemporary art, as well as everyday life. A programmes that brings together practitioners from around the world exploring common ideas and practices. We focus on geographies outside the Western context, however we open to projects that critically engage with non-hegemonic narratives independently where the artists is from and based.
VENTO SUL Art Residencies Program is a WeWe partnership with the non-formal cultural space Espaço Espelho D'Agua in Portugal.

SELECTION PROCESS
Our selection process varies depending on the specific residency programme, project, partner, and funder.
Our selection process varies depending on the specific residency programme, project, partner, funder, and place.
Usually our residents are selected via:
1. Solicited proposals or nominations from liked-minded curators, artist networks, or organisations.
2. Open calls for applications, which are reviewed by a jury of art professionals.
Current and upcoming opportunities are posted in our website. Application forms are made available during the period for these solicited proposals, and each application includes the terms of the residency and funding available, if appropriate.
Due to the volume of enquiries, we are not always able to respond to requests for information about our open calls. The best way to hear of new opportunities is to subscribe to our newsletter, and follow us on social media
