the CERA PROJECT. United Kingdom | 31.07 – 19.08.2016

In very thin line interrelates a mix of emotions, media and narratives by inviting the audience to experience the very dark and the very bright, as a result of the tension between vulnerability and resistance, love and pain that is constantly whispered in our daily struggles. This thin line separates us, but we tend to thicken it by emphasising external environmental aspects — such as gender, race, education, culture and religion. As the writer Mimma Salami underlined, the more illusions we have about the other the more erroneous perceptions we will have about the reality of people’s lives, and the less meaning we will find in ours. This exhibition curated by Inês Valle and Mafalda Budib brings together six visual artists Bumi Thomas, Chun Hua Catherine Dong, Nilbar Güreş, Nikki Luna, Rita GT and Lorena Wolffer who through their art practices have been giving voice to female narratives.

A very thin but strong line connects these creative women, who, in this exhibition at the CERA PROJECT have shared and devoured devious, discriminatory and potent realities to which many women are being subjected in a world that is mainly controlled by a capitalist masculine system, based on power and double standards in all levels and domains. Women who avoid victimisation, and weave through their attitude towards life a new voice from their own very particular individual and collective arenas a meaning to our lives. As in the Mexican story of the wild woman – wolf woman/ La Loba — we need to establish our territory with certainty and pride, to speak and act on one another's behalf; to be aware, to draw the innate powers of intuition and recognise what is ours, and rise without fear. For certain, a call to become stronger, to live according to our will and to inspire others to follow their path, but ultimately a story forces us to see our personal power and unique strength overloaded with ancestral knowledge, creativity and perseverance.
