The Cera Project and Espaço Espelho D'Agua are please to present the collaborative concert of the musicians Tcheka and João Ventura.
Together they will bring their distinct styles to this wonderful collaboration that floats through a dynamic and exciting aural scenery filled with rhythms and melodies that embrace all sensibilities.
Tcheka, born Manuel Lopes Andrade, in a small, remote spot on the island of Santiago, Cape Verde, on 20 July 1973, has created an unique and exquisite style that is a testament to the global influences he has embraced.
His essence is impossible to grasp, let alone pin down – he is neither modernist, nor traditionalist, and his music resists any easy categorization or comparison. While referencing multiple genres from Cape Verde (batuku, funaná, finason, tabanka, morna and coladera), Tcheka’s music is also a busy intersection of Brazilian and African pop, traditional forms, folk, jazz, blues, rock, literature, anthropology and film. It is never just Cape Verdean, and it’s never just music, but it’s always captivating.

João Ventura was born into a family of artists, João Ventura became interested in art early. He started playing the piano at the age of four and began studying classical music at nine. He is currently completing his doctorate in Portugal. Despite frequent studies of classical music, Ventura has always maintained close contact with popular music. He always saw the two types of music as complementary and decided to mix and fuse the two, thus creating a peculiar and authentic sound which he has named Contraponto.
