Programme “Territories, Resistance, Freedom”

« Entre o céu e a terra (between heaven&earth »

by Mónica Calle with Mafalda Jara and Mónica Garnel

Centro Cultural Carpintarias de São Lázaro . 22 .05–07.06.2025

Participatory Live Performance | 22 May –7 June

As part of the group exhibition “…e o perú fugiu!”, Mónica Calle presents «Entre o Céu e a Terra (Between Heaven and Earth)», a performative work created for BoCA – Biennial of Contemporary Arts in 2021, set amidst the beaches and dunes of Costa da Caparica. Now reimagined, the performance resurfaces at the Cultural Centre Carpintarias de São Lázaro Cultural Centre in Lisbon, as part of a collective reflection on the theme of freedom, in an intimate and exclusive format, designed for a limited audience.

Following deeply personal works such as Carta and Ensaio Para Uma Cartografia, this piece emerges inspired by the writings of Fiama Hasse Pais Brandão and by a 26-day pilgrimage on foot, from Lisbon Cathedral to Santiago de Compostela, undertaken by three actresses. Here, Mónica resumes her exploration of identity and female representation, reaffirming the poetic radicalism and marginality that define her theatre.

Over five days, with three performances daily, «Entre o Céu e a Terra» leads us into an undefinable territory: “In the Apocalypse, the repentant demons shall be angels, and the guilty angels shall be demons, bound physically, back to back.”– Fiama Hasse Pais Brandão, I Saw the Epidaurus.
