Programme “Territories, Resistance, Freedom”

« International Waters»

by Francisca Rocha Gonçalves / SINØ

Centro Cultural Carpintarias de São Lázaro . 05 .06.2025

Live Performance | 5 June, 9pm

As part of the collective art exhibition “…e o perú fugiu!”, Francisca Rocha Gonçalves presents the live performance, «International Waters», a work created especially for this context.

The performance explores the idea of freedom—beyond borders, beyond species, and through sound itself. Using water, light, and sound as its primary elements, it forges a connection between the open ocean and the global challenges we face today. In «International Waters»—vast zones of the sea that lie beyond the jurisdiction of any single nation—movement is unrestricted and sound travels freely, crossing both physical and political boundaries.

These shared spaces, governed by international law and regarded as the common heritage of humanity, provide the stage for urgent questions of responsibility, coexistence, and the fragile systems that sustain us. The reflections, refractions, and dispersions of light in water evoke the fluidity of these environments, where marine life moves and communicates in ways that echo human migration and global interconnectedness.
